Strange problem ...

I was translating products and cateogies for a time and it was working working fine ... suddenly now when i add a product or a category and press to change language to add the correspondant language desc... the flags are not there anymore to show me if im in french or english ... strange ...

What could do that ...

Are the flags still visible in your already existing category and product edit views?
If you add a new category or product, are the descriptions stored in the english and french database tables correctly?

Check the settings desrcibed in this post (maybe you accidentially changed one): http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=104901.0
Also, use phpMyAdmin to check if the product descriptions are stored in the correct tables (in your case probably xxxxx_virtuemart_products_en_en and xxxxx_virtuemart_products_fr_fr).
Did you add another extension or template recently (perhaps there is a javascript conflict with VM2)?

Then it probably wouldn't hurt if you make a backup of your site and update to VirtueMart version 2.0.18a :-)
