Title: Which to choose, vm2 or 3
Post by: mblokdijk on December 01, 2014, 11:46:19 AM
I am having some issues... I want to support my clients with Joomla 3 and its long term support. As this is ending for Joomla 2.5. But i also want to give my clients a good webshop.

And at this time both is not possible -at this time- i think.

VM3 is just out, but most components and add-ons i use for VM2, that really make the difference, are not working on Joomla 3. For instance, email manager, or CCVAOM, facebook logons, and others i have tried...

How would you decide which to use. VM2 of VM3? thus Joomla 2 or Joomla 3.

Love to hear your opinion.

If you need those 3rd party extensions and they are not ready yet for VM3 then you should start with VM2.6.12 (or 2.6.14 which should be available soon). Then, when the other extensions are VM3 ready you can update to VM3, which I have already done with several sites with hardly any issues - just templating. Then later update Joomla to J3.x.

Very few users are going to stop using/developing with J2.5 just because its notional support has finished. Others, such as the VM team will be offering security updates for 2.5 should those become necessary.  The majority of Joomla sites out there are still using J1.5.

yep, for vm i guess the updates wil come, also in the 2.x platform. but not for Joomla, making the choice for joomla 2.5 less logical. but i need components that are not (yet) working on Joomla 3. the main component i need is one to change my orders/invoices. Do you know any working on Joomla 3 and VM 3??

Change your order/invoices

What do you need to change / why etc

i am implementing a productbuilder in virtuemart, the client wants to have a the default layout changed, so that it can be used as a quote

ccvaom did the trick in vm 2.5 but in vm3 i am not able to find a working component.

Yes - product builder is tricky - you either wait till the ext. builders update their extension . (no harm in contacting them to ask when) or go VM2 and upgrade when available

Product Builder is complatible with VM3. Was even before VM3 became stable

Afaik the problem is in the integration of PB with another 3rd party.

From my point of view you don't necessarily need another component to handle quotes. It can be done by modifying PB to carry out some additional functionalities (send emails etc)

YEP productbuilder is working fine. it makes a list of products in a cart, and does a great job doing so. But then the cart is submitted, emails get sent to the client and admin, and those need to be qoute-worthy, major layout changes need to be made. I am used doing that with interamind vm-emails, or cc ccvaom. but both dont work on Joomla 3 and VM3

so, revert to Joomla 2.5 or not?

have you asked these ext. makers whether they will release VM3 versions?

we can't answer this for you... you know what spec. u require -- u must make the decision

All emails in VM2/3 are templates - with a bit of html/css they can be made to display anything

I still believe that you can achieve what you want without a 3rd party for the emails.

As GJC pointed, you can do whatever you want with email templates
