Possible to use a different template for VM to the Joomla template?

Hello

Im trying to create a VM2 template where one can install as you would any Joomla template but to be able to continue to use their current Joomla template, selecting the VM template only via the Virtuemart configuration. Basically allow the VM template to be used along side any Joomla template of their choice.

Is there any way this should be possible? Any effort I've tried so far selecting the VM template only in the VM confiuration doesnt seem to work.
