Strange PDF

I just installed vm 2 and when i add a PDF file to a product it show in the lightbox but its showing garbage characters even if i select downloadable.. Can anyone help me

A pdf file is not an image as such, and should not show in lightbox. It should be available to download or open if the browser permits it.

What is the correct way to add PDF and other downloadable files to product?

Use the 2.0.1 for that. There you can upload downloadable products, which is not virtual goods for sale (shipped per download).
