If you turn on "Debug Language" in Joomla configuration, and then try to open the VM2 backend in italian language, it should list one or more lines from the file ...administrator/language/it-IT.com_virtuemart.ini near the bottom of the debug list, if there is an error in the language file.

I'll try to test it on one of my installations this evening and let you know whether it works or not.

    /var/www/vhosts/mysite.com/httpdocs/cartella/administrator/language/en-GB/en-GB.com_virtuemart.ini : errore(i) alla(e) linea(e) 7

Just had another short look at the backend it-IT.com_virtuemart.ini. The problem actually appears to be a number of illegal characters used in lines 60, 379, 526, 825, 888, 1521, 1587, 1588, 1589.
See here: http://docs.joomla.org/Specification_of_language_files
I suppose the italian fellow who supplied this file was still working with Joomla 1.5.x.
Do you think you can correct the lines yourself?

I will move this thread to the VM2 language/translations section later today.

We have just solved the problem, it was an error of closure.
We have replaced some quotes " " with quotes ' '.
Thank you so much for your cooperation.  :)

Can you please upload the corrected file (zip) here, so I can replace the one containing characters illegal in J1.7.x with a working one in the VM2 trunk?

The correct file will be sent by the Italian team virtuemart.
Thanks to all the good work!

Hi jjk, about this problem of the double quotes, what is the correct solution? Reading the Joomla document you linked, they say to use _QQ_ for double quotes. You are using this standard for VM languages? It will also work in Joomla 1.5?

As far as I know using escaped quotes ( \") causes conflicts with php 5.2. Using the _QQ_ will work for both Joomla versions, but most translations (including my german VM2 translation) eliminated double quotes from the language strings. I've used single quotes and occationally the (alt +174) (alt +175) characters or html tags like <strong>...</strong> color attributes, etc.
