Coupon Code Discounts should have limited usage
« on: March 21, 2005, 20:39:49 pm »
There is an oversight that allows people to keep entering a coupon code over and over again because there is no system limiting the usage of the coupon code.

OSCommerce's coupon codes module does it right - you can define a coupon to be used only once per user (or X times per user).  You can also have it defined that there are X number of coupons total, meaning the coupon can be redeemed X times before the coupon becomes invalid.

The way it's set up now, people can abuse the system by using a coupon an infinite amount of times.

Sorry for my disorganized thoughts, but here's something else:

In OSCommerce you can limit a coupon's usage to a specific product, or manufacturer, or an entire product category (not just have it store-wide).

You could also have the coupon do things other than static-monetary or percentage discounts.  You could have a 'free shipping' coupon.

Also, you could have the coupon only become valid when a shopper has $ X-dollars worth of goods in the shopping cart.  (i.e. spend $100 and get $10-off).

If you want to get even fancier, you could make the coupon good for a free product that automatically gets populated into your cart.

These features would make the discount coupon system GREAT.

If you have a coupon of the type "Gift", it can only be used once...

We already HAVE it.

i can't implement a marketing campaign with a gift coupon because the coupon disappears once someone uses it.

I want it where the coupon created can be used by multiple people with no limit on the total number of redemptions... only each member can only use it once.  Surely you've seen coupons real-life coupons with the fine print reading "Usage: only 1 per customer".

Oh, ok
another missing feature...

This will need a small change of the database structure.
I'll put it on the to-do list.

Awesome.  You're doing a good thing Soeren.

Also, take into account the other features I mentioned.  If you want, log into an OSCommerce store i'm in the middle of making - www.nica-pottery.com/admin/index.php

Click on "catalog".
Then click on "coupons (or somethign like that)" on the left hand side.

You can see the coupon creator in use.  You can also see the "gift voucher" which works similar to your "gift coupon".  The only difference is that the gift voucher is a purchasable product (like a gift certificate) that gets applied a specific customer ID and cannot be used by anyone other than that customer.  It acts as store credit for a specific amount of money.

The customer can then decide to "send his gift voucher to another person".  He can email his entire gift voucher amount (or a portion of his gift voucher amount) to a friend or to another customer.  That store credit now leaves his hands and is given to that new person.

It's pretty complete - it's like buying a gift certificate for yourself or for another person.

Also, store owners often give refunds for returned products or cancelled orders in the form of a gift voucher instead of cash back.

This is something to think about for the mambo-phpshop.

maybe you could implement a different kind of coupon?
an automatic one, where there is actually a 'code'..
Here's my idea:
Each time a person buys a product, they receive a special, unique 'one-time' coupon code, and the discount depends on how much they paid. So if they pay a lot, they get a big discount for their next product that they buy. They can give the code to anybody they want, but once it's been used, then it's gone forever. If they buy something with a coupon, then they don't receive another coupon code :)

Or, maybe you could give them a coupon code only if they buy a certain product, or make the coupon code work only for a certain product :D

I think this would be a nice implementation, but it might be very hard :/
I would definitely use this though, as I don't mind giving people discounts :P

I agree.  The coupon option is great!  Many great suggestions above and I'll try to compile them.

Coupon codes:

1)  Coupons that can only be used once per user (not just Gift Coupons)

2)  Expiration dates

3)  By customer group (let's say by club or organization)

4)  Coupon code generator (that can be sent out in a newsletter email)  -  this would be the type that can only be used once per user

These are listed by importance (in my opinion)

I desperately need this functionality, I must admit I'm somewhat surprised this hasn't been implemented yet... especially since this thread started more than three years ago. The whole area around discounts/coupons is a place where Virtuemart is lacking big time... and as much as I like it I might have to look at switching to OSCommerce or Zencart now... If anyone knows of an addon for fixing this please, please, please let me know asap.

And Virtuemart dev-team, if you would please raise the priority of this RFE I would be forever grateful.

Thanks,

/Johan/
