Online Car Sales... help with configuration of store
« on: August 10, 2011, 21:56:18 pm »
Hello everyone,
I am asking for help because I am thoroughly confused regarding the usage of Product, Product Category, Attributes, Types and Type Parameters... insofar as applying those variables to selling cars.
1. The items I will be selling are unique... each car is unique with its set of specifications
2. Manufacturers... that is easy: Ford, Chevrolet, Mazda... etc.
3. Types: sedan, hatchback, sport, pick-up, SUV
4. Where do I place the models? i.e. Chevrolet: (Aveo), (Impala), etc.
5. Where do I place the following attributes, which are common to all cars:
Year
Fuel
mileage
engine
color
# of doors
transmission
traction
I would like not to have to type the above for every item I have... how do I place them so that it appears in every new item I register, and of course it should be searchable...
(this is where I get confused between attributes and type parameters...

All help will be greatly appreciated.
regards, Peter

I would not use VirtueMart for this. You are wanting VM to do something that takes a lot of time to set up and it will take a lot of time to make each entry. I would use SobiPro instead - in fact when you install the component it already has a car section in the dummy data. I'm pretty sure you can build a template for exactly your fields, and like VirtueMart it has a PayPal payment system built in - should anyone want to buy a car that way......

Currently using VM 3.4.3.10057 on Joomla 3.9.10 PHP 7.0.33
Testing VM 3.5.0.10097 on Joomla 3.9.10

A possible solution would be to use categories for some fields e.g. Types

Also you could create a category tree for the Make and Model of this type

-Make
--Model A
--Model B
-Make2
--Model 2A

The
The Year
Fuel
...etc

Could be product attributes

In the front end you could use one of the existing filtering extensions to filter your products selecting multiple categories (Type, Make, Model)

I don't know the size of your shop but this is a solution i have implemented in a medium sized shop.
