How can I show a specific number of the categories on the homesite

Now I'm trying  to customize the homesite of the site. I want to show only selected categories or a specific numbers of the categories on the homesite. How can I do that?

Please let me know on which platform you are developing your website?
Actually I am developing new site on rental houses with platform PHP5.
