Likely an issue with whatever SEF program you are running not detecting manufacturer as a param to make SEF.

Can you give me an example how to hack vmsef in order to change the url : "store?page=shop.browse&manufacturer_id=12"

i don;t use it, so I cannot help. Sry. You'd need to understand how it's picking up parameters and creating the conversion.

Template Designer?

Mbit, I do not believe this is a solution. Changing file permissions will not help your SEF naming conventions.

I normally dont reply.

But I want to thank Forrest!
I hope he reads this.
I spend hours trying to use joomfish to translate my site into two urls, which works, but the cart and checkout from virtuemart needs a static url.
So returning from paypal or something I got an error.

Long story short your if else statement did the trick for me.
A thousand thanks to you forrest! you saved me a lot of work and frustration, take care
