Which SEF addon for VM to use?
« on: January 06, 2009, 11:38:04 am »
I am using joomla 1.5.x and VM 1.1.2 .

I turned on joomla core SEF. Worked fine with contents url but didn't work with ugly VM urls. So how to enable SEF for VM? Which addon should I use?

I would recommend sh404. It works great with VM and even has specific settings in its global config to customize how the VM url is displayed, you can opt to display product category, product sku etc.

Find it here:

http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/site-management/sef/2380/details

and its free!

Hope that helps.

sh404SEF has issues with VM, or the other way around. For example, pagination wont work.

Check JoomSEF by Artio for a fully working component.

i've got all joomla seo settings to disabled. i've got sh404 to insert product id against product - this seems to handle child products - previously it was not. and i have sh404 set to use .htaccess (mod rewrite). at the moment it seems to be working fine - i guess since i am not an expert only time will tell.

Lylene, apparently the problem with pagination is this:

1. Perform a search on your VM site with sh404
2. Go to Page 2 of search results, should be fine to this point.
3. Go back to Page 1 and it forgets what Page 1 really was and displays "random results."  That is the pagination problem I believe.

The sh404 dev team has indicated over and over that it is a VM bug and nobody can seem to figure out how to fix it.. it's been months and months..

This link gives you all the background of pagination issues:

Can anyone elaborate?  I may have to research Artio JoomSEF.  Is that the only working SEF plugin for VM?

Cheers

This may be slightly off topic but is there really any valid reason to use SEF at all anymore except to make more readable and intuitive URLS?  I mean is there really any SEO advantage to doing this?  I implemented SEF about 2-3 years ago and I immediately lost the ability to track visitors refering information (I was using Hitslink at the time).  I would give it another try but I amtold that the Apache re-write strips off the referring information and eliminate the ability of analytics programs to work correctly.  If this is no longer true then I am wondering if it is stillworht the tobule if there is no SEO advantage.  Anyone?

I thought I would report back.  I did pose the question on the forum suggested and did not receive any responses.  I am still very curious about this so I would to hear back from anyone who has experience with this.
