Grouping multiple products.
« on: April 29, 2008, 01:18:02 am »
Just thought I would ask here before I spend to many nights setting this up.  I installed 1.1 and am having a bit fun entering products. I find that the clone tool is working great for my products, however I am conserned that the users in the front end might be overwelmed by the amount of similar items might throw them off.  Heres an example of only two similar products with the seperate options.

sku aaa121 1" with 1" bore
sku aaa122 1" with 1.25" bore
sku aaa123 1" with 1.5" bore
sku aab121 1.24" with 1" bore
sku aab122 1.24" with 1.25" bore
sku aab123 1.24" with 1.5" bore
sku aab124 1.24" with 1.75" bore

There are 47 total products in each category, and about 6 categories.  I am able to group products by product type, but the current line using a seperate sku for each item is huge.  Well over 2000 products.  Im thinking there has to be a better way.  Perhaps not giving each item a numerical value in the sku, and then having the customer specify the bore size when ordering.  Not sure how that will work.  Im going to be kicking orders back to customers for missing info if I set it up like that.

Help!

So what do you all think?  Am I insane or what?  Is there a better way to get this done without spending a better part of a year setting up products?

Would simple product attributes not work for you?
