Multiple tax rates, how and none taxable item request.
« on: February 01, 2008, 00:33:54 am »
Tax issues, there are lot of postings on tax subject all over the forum instead of replying to those, I decide to create a new topic specifically for VirtueMart 1.1 and try to fix it.

Everyone’s problem could be different based on geographical location, tax amount and various stuff, please add your suggestions to this topic.

I am based in California, USA hence below is based on my needs.

In CA food has no tax but other items are taxable generally 8.25% but some very few items have higher tax.

Question that has come up how to apply multiple tax?

I read the manual but was not much of help.

I need to add two tax rates, I have ‘multiple tax rates?’ enabled but can not figure how to add two tax amount for one state.

State California
General item tax = 8.25%
Tobacco tax = 17%

When I try to add the second tax amount for CA I get the message ‘This state already listed’ how to add 17% to tax list?

An extra option is need for none taxable item such as food and etc.
This hack could be added http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=32389.msg96853#msg96853

In the state of Oklahoma if you live in the state plus you sell in the state you have to charge county (by zip) tax plus state tax.

The best solution I found is:

Then used for the database:

It worked great expect now I think that hack caused the attribute list functions to stop sending $ price values to the checkout.

#Update:  The hack indeed has broke the attribute function from adding or subtracting price values.

But the best solution was to look-up the user's zip and state then charge them if they were in the state plus the zip that went with that state.  Thomas's hack does just that.  I wish in the future development of VM would include something similar.

This is a major need for lots of us.  For instance, my business is operated in North Carolina.  Customers who also live in North Carolina need to be taxed 6.75% for non-food purchases, and 2.0% for food purchases.  Anyone that doesn't live in North Carolina should not get taxed at all.

SURELY there's a way to have two tax rates in one state!  I can't think of a single logical reason to limit the tax rates to one-per-state.

Any ideas out there?

Things get even worse; i would be in need for the following
- 19% VAT for general products
- 6% VAT for books

And now we get the part where i really would like to see some changes and or help in how to solve this;

- 19% VAT on 50% of the salesprice of a second-hand product.
- 6% VAT on 50% of the salesprice of a second-hand book.

Is this possible with virtuemart ? are there maybe addons which can take care of a much more flexible way of adding TAX to the system.

I believe that instead of binding it to countries and states, it would be much better to leave the names open and instead of a percentage you fill in a free-form calculation field where the administrator can just simply add the calculation for the tax.

Any ideas about this? how did others solve this ?

This is a nonexistent feature in VirtueMart.  As others before me, I had to hire a programmer to customize VirtueMart for me to add this feature.  I contacted a VM Forum member, Joseph Kwan to do mine for me.  He did a great job.

I live in arkansas and we have 75 counties, I need to be able to tax each county, as  wel las add state tax, this feature needs to be added, we only will have 1 tax per county then add in the state in the end or make it combine before showing total tax. Any ideas, I am considering adding some code, I will begin testing and see if this will work. I will post findings, if anyone finds out before this please advise. Keep up the good work. I have some changes to the cart as well. I will post in the appropiate section.

Thanks
