Error and Warning messages disappear

Is this configurable or is it a defect to add to you list?  In the backend the error and warning messages display for only a couple of seconds and then disappear.  In some cases the message dialog is blank.  In one case the message told me it couldn't write to a path, but only showed the first half of the path (and because it kept disappearing I could only read that much of it by repeating the error several times).

I'm using the January 27 nightly build with:
- Joomla 1.5 Stable
- msql Ver 12.22 Distrib 4.0.16
- PHP 4.4.1
- FreeBSD 4.11 stable

No response needed unless you think I'm doing something wrong or need more information.
