I get this message on a blank page when trying to save the status of an order to 'confirmed' on administrator/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&view=orders
(because the paypal token failed to update the completed payment (which is a recurring issue, but nevermind that now) )

QuoteTCPDF ERROR: Could not include font definition file: helvetica

When I click back and reload the list, the order is set to 'confirmed' but obviously something went wrong in the creation of the invoice pdf.

How to solve that error?
Do I need to install a VM plugin font?

StefanSTS

I guess you need to wait for TCPDF 1.0.8 to appear here:
http://dev.virtuemart.net/projects/tcpdf/files

Your version number might help too.

Please use only stable versions with even numbers for your live shop! Use Alpha versions only if you know what risk you are taking.

I use the 1.0.8 version and I get the same problem with freemono

The problem is not VM. Another plugin load anover instalation of  tcpdf library before the VM does.
In my case it was System - DPCalendar plugin
