Custom Field Type for textbox

Hi, I would like to be able to add a text box for a product. My example is a product whereby they can have it engraved with a personalised message. There is an extra charge for this, so if the customer chooses to engrave the product, they can type the message in a text box and it will add a cost and record the message (I would also like to limit the message to say 20 characters). I have tried with different custom field types but can't find the one i'm after. Should I be using several types or should I be doing this a different way?

Use Customfield of type 'Text Area', then assign that to your (child) product(s)?
