Allow only one order per customer

Virtuemart 3.4.2 Joomla 3.9.6
We use Virtuemart in a peculiar way. We have adapted it to serve as a system for borrowing textbooks for a year. Only registered customers can request textbooks.
Now we have the need to limit to 1 the number of orders that the same customer can make. Is it possible to set this limit?
