Good day

My client wants to change prices themselves - would this be possible?
What user rights do I give them?
Can they do changes from the front end?

You can allow front-end editing, just assign the right ACL settings - http://docs.virtuemart.net/manual/general-concepts/185-administrative-frontend-access-with-acl.html
