Featured froducts from subcategories

in category view i want to display some featured products from subcategories
as this:

Current category

category description

Subcategory name 1

prod 1-1, prod 1-2, prod 1-3

Subcategory name 2

prod 2-1, prod 2-2, prod 2-3

i think it is not possible without direct database query?
