Spelling Inconsistencies ("email")

I've tried to search this, but the nature of the query makes search strings difficult so I've not found anything and I don't know if that's because there's nothing to find or not.

I wasn't sure whether or not to bring this up but I've just been tasked with going through our site and ensuring "email" is spelled consistently. There are conflicting opinions on which spelling is correct ("email" vs "e-mail"), but the language files appear to have a mixture of "email", "Email", "e-mail" and "E-mail" throughout.

So I suppose my questions are:

1) Do you have a policy or an approach for standardisation - this is unlikely to be the only word where usage varies so much.

2) Do you have a suggestion on an easy way for me to fix this in my files (we're settling on the "email" style). Creating an override for all of them will take all day, but I'm not entirely sure which language files contain them.

The term will have been entered into the language strings at different times over the years and by different people. So there is no consitent or standard way. In my view it would be Email at the beginning of a sentence string and email elswhere.  Joomla's language overrides don't take very long to set up.

I suppose you (or your boss) is the first one who complains about this. There is no standardization in English. See for example https://writingexplained.org/e-mail-or-email or http://grammarist.com/style/e-mail-email/ or https://www.talk.edu/learn-english/grammar/web-dictionary-texting/e-mail-or-email/.

In other languages it often depends on whether it is used as a noun or a verb. And as the first word in a sentence the 'E' should be a capital letter. I think a grammatically correct usage in English would be e-mail, because it is an abbreviation of the two separate words 'electronic mail'.

In my opinion the 'best' article about which spelling to use is this one: http://www.future-perfect.co.uk/grammar-tip/is-it-e-mail-email-e-mail-or-email/

I might standardize it in one of the next versions of VirtueMart. At present mostly 'email' is being used in VM.

If you want to create overrides in the meantime, you can load the language files into an editor like Notepad++, search for and copy the lines with e-mail into a new file and then search/replace e-mail/email. After that you could copy the changed language strings into the Joomla override form. Should take only a few minutes.

I thought that might be the way to do it. Which language files do I need (folder, not individual files) - when I make an override it goes somewhere else (I think)

Basic Joomla!    ;)

Override files go in joomla_root/language/overrides/ and are of the filename format  en-GB.override.ini
