Hello - I'm hoping a person much clever than me can help! I'm new to virtuemart and am stuck on the tax/calculations - no matter what I do it seems to revert to a default calculation. All I want to achieve is that the cost price (that the customer pays) is inclusive of GST. For what ever reason this is over-ridden and a 'base cost' is calculated by default and the final price is the one displayed on the web-page ... any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sounds to me like you are misunderstanding the 'Cost price'. Cost price typically is what you are paying for the product to your supplier. Assuming you are located in Australia, you should use 'VAT tax per product' (GST = VAT). The tax rule is then applied to the 'Base Price' (net price).
See here: https://docs.virtuemart.net/manual/general-concepts/204-tax-and-calculation-rules-overview.html
and eventually this old tutorial helps: https://docs.virtuemart.net/tutorials/administration-configuration-vm-2/109-taxes-calculation-rules-case-1.html (scroll down to the tax section)
