PayPal payment method does not return transaction_id

Hi,
Virtuemart PayPal payment method does not return transaction_id. I need it to change status after a successful transaction. Did I miss something in configuration ? I am using joomla 3.8 and virtuemart 3.2.4. Is it because I am in sandbox ?
