no 404 error in category

That's how VM handles 404s - you can turn this off and use Joomla's 404 handling in Configuration/Shopfront.  Enable VirtueMart 404 error handling - no

Allthough this post might be a little old, I can reproduce this issue even in VM 3.0.12

Switching "Enable VirtueMart 404 error handling" to "no" only works, if the standard VM starting page is set as home page. If the category list is set as home page, no 404 ever pops up

yes, the 404 handling does not involve sub-category pages.

I do not know a fix to this
