VM URLs from Joomla pages versus VM pages

I'm using VM 2.6.6 and I'm running into problems whereby plugins which rely on VM's category or product lists display incomplete URLs if those plugins are displayed outside of the VM pages.

For example, I have a menu extension and a gallery extension that display full virtuemart URLs including the itemid segment - if those plugins appear on VM pages. But those same plugins will use URLs without the itemid segment if displayed on other external pages.

Does anyone know how to fix that? I'm using non-SEF URLs (because SEF was causing problems) and have URL rewriting and Add Suffix to URL turned on.

Is there a solution using htaccess to add it to VM links which are missing it?
