I just upgraded my Joomla from 2.5 to 3.4.1 and VM from 2.0 to 3.0 My host provider does not provide any option for a safe path so I get an error message regarding this as well. Anyone out there with a Solution ??

Create a "safe" directory at whatever level your host permits. You can always call it something difficult to guess such as "vcdklkjgvd" instead of vmfiles.
