Parent and children

Can I get children without a parent (not a biological/theological question)?
I need children to be hidden in a category view (want to see just parents) but displayed in a parent flypage as ordering options.

Do you mean options (eg size/colour) rather than stand alone child products? If so you can use template overrides to hive the variants on the category view.

But these happens by default. No?

If the child products are uncategorized (which happens by default), then they won't be displayed in the category but they will be there in the products details page

Couldn't see a forest for the trees. It solved the problem. Somehow I kept grouping children in the same category as parent never questioning is it necessary for the parent-child to be in a same cat?

Btw is there a way to clone a parent and not to loose relationship to all the children?
