Image or File upload at checkout

I'm wondering other than paid extensions, is there a FREE way to enable a customer to upload a file or in my case an image to be sent with their order.

For example, My customers can order personalized products with their own images. I want them to be able to upload an image during the checkout process for free without paying for an extension.  Just seems like this should be something already available in the main component.

I think it is highly unlikely that you will find such a plugin for free.

But there are plugins like this one:  http://extensions.joomla.org/extension/order-upload-pro-for-virtuemart
