Automate related products

Hello there,

Assume that we have 4 main product categories with subcategories in each main category. I need only to a specific subcategory to automate the related products showing at flyer template or pop up page (when you add product to cart) of virtuemart. I need to automatically show at related products, products of the same main category but from different subcategories than the current one.

Is this possible somehow?
