Sounds like your DB tables aren't up to date

back up your DB

enable database tools on Config->Config->Shop tab

then Tools & Migration - click 'Install or if nesscesary update tables' -> agree

Don't click anything else

then check your #__virtuemart_products table to see if the product_gtin is there
