Why is the VM checkout so bad?

I like VM2 because I can customize it to my own wishes, but there is one thing that I can't work with and that's the checkout. My users don't understand the checkout and I can't get it right.

A normal logic checkout procedure should be:

1. See cart
2. Choose to login, register or chekout as guest
3. Choose shipment
4. Choose payment
5. Check data and order

Also there should be a bar that show different steps and it should be possible to go one step back in the process. Once I ordered trough the site, the next time I can't choose my address anywhere??

I don't want to spend hours and hours on this stupid checkout, I just want to get my shop online! Is there someone that has customized their checkout to a normal, understandable process?
