Which Joomla version?

What happens when you try to install? What error messages do you get? Is this on a real server or on localhost?

See http://docs.virtuemart.net/tutorials/30-installation-migration-upgrade-vm-2/98-possible-virtuemart-installation-problems.html

Thanks for your reply.

I don't how to install the two files below on local host. Normally we install zip files for joomla.

there are two files,i.e com_virtuemart.2.0.20b_ext_aio.tar.gz
com_virtuemart.2.0.20b.tar.gz

These are standard Linux file packages and are used because the package size is smaller than .zip, but maybe you have not compiled your local host to untar files.  In that case use the zip file packages - available on http://dev.virtuemart.net/projects/virtuemart/files  (although at this moment that server is down).

YOu should also make sure you have enough php resources on your localhost. I use the settings listed in http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=102045.msg339125#msg339125  but for localhost, as it runs slower than a real server, you may need to use higher values.
