Large error log

I was looking at the size of files in my Joomla site & noticed that the components/com_virtuemart/error_log file is 75MB

Can I delete the file or delete the contents to save space?

You can delete an error log file, but maybe you should look at it first to see what the errors are - they are usually PHP warnings and notices related to using of old software versions with more recent versions of PHP. I get no errors reported using VM2.0.8e

OK I am using an old version of Virtuemart 1.1.8

I added a mod for free shipping for just certain products ( I don't think the mod was upgraded for newer versions of virtuemart) . Do you know if the latest version of Virtuemart allows free shipping just for certain products?

Yes you can do that with VM2 by giving them a weight of (for example) zero or 1, and making no shipping charge for that weight.
