Replace navigation with buttons

I have created my own Joomla template (only took me 5 years !!!) and now I need to make some changes to the Virtuemart template and its proving to be more of a challenge.

Basically I want to replace this:
 
  «« Start « Prev 1 Next » End »»

And in its place I want to put 2 buttons for previous and next.

Can someone please point me in the right direction bearing in mind I am not deep blue and would need some clear, concise instruction - treat me like an idiot, really go on....

Can someone please point me in the right direction for this one......just point me in the direction of documentation is fine if thats all you can do.

Seriously, if I missed something on the forum and am being punished for not seeing it......I searched and tried solutions given and nothing worked.

Can someone please point me in the right direction as I find it difficult to think nobody has tried to replace the default pagination/navigation before me
