Where do you set the sizes of images? I found where to set the size of the thumbnail, but is there a way to set the size of the medium image that VM generates?

There is deliberately no such setting in VM2 configuration for the product images in order to keep users from the bad habit to upload huge images while they actually need much smaller ones and in this way urge them to adjust the images to the correct size before uploding them into VM2.

The reason basically is this:
Upload huge images which have to be resized by the system = binding unnecessary system resources + slow website + unsharp images
Upload pre-adjusted images (optimized with Photoshop, IrfanView or one of many other photo editors) in correct size = using less system resources + fast website + sharp images.

My VM2 shop currently holds 1600+ images :)

That's more or less a matter of personal taste and the template you are using.
Personally I use (in width) 175px for the thumbnails, 350px for the main product image and 750px for large additional product images.

Would be nice to have not just a thumbnail option. I think many sites would like to provide thumb, medium and large images. Large for fullscreen view, like the integrated javascript box (facebox, lightbox, whatever-box) view. its sadly to see the same size on the product detail page and when i click on it, it doesn't get bigger.

Would be nice too, if the image dimension are stored in the db and written in the img tags.

...simply attach a larger second image to the product.

hm its not that simple... i always have to upload 2 pictures. And i have to create the correct link to the larger image, which is not that easy because there is no reference in the database or no extra folder with the same name of the picture in it. And Image editing is a pita right now.
just saying would be nice to have an extra option for medium size images nor just for thumbnails.

It's very easy. Basically you just have to upload images to your image folder(s) and then click on 'Syncronize Media to Virtuemart' in your VM2 'Tools & Migration' view. Thereafter you can see the images in your 'Media Files' list (make shure your new files are published) and you can edit the image information either from the Media List view or (after searching and selection the image filename) in the Product details view.

However, it makes sense to think a little bit about your image folder(s) structure and image filenames before you add a lot of images. (I currently have 1600+ images in my shop and this part of VM2 works very well)
Also, see the above first and second post in this forum thread

Thanks, thats good to know that you can manage your images with the native joomla 'media files' and import them. creating an useful structure is way easier now, even its a workaround.
i'll give it a try later, thanks jjk

I was talking about Virtuemart's own media manager. In the Joomla media manager you can't edit the image information.

oh ok.
so every time you upload an image, you have to type in the right folder path? not very user friendly. mistakes can happen very easily.
The folder 'typeless' seems to be the default. where do the images go after synchronization? to '/images/stories/virtuemart/product/'?
so i don't really have an option to structure my files and folder.
sorry maybe i don't get it.

right now i can't test the synchronization that easy.

What i want is  like this:

medium imagesto
'/images/stories/virtuemart/product/medium/'
and the large to
'/images/stories/virtuemart/product/large/'

is there a file/folder browser in development?

thanks
karl

I'm still using this structure of image folders:
http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=91474.msg300366#msg300366
However, I usually don't use the VM2 image upload feature. Instead I copy them directly into my VM2 image folders (could be i.e. 100 images at once)
If you like you can use the Joomla media file manager of course. See here: http://cocoate.com/de/screencast/de0023
