If you want a frontpage with all VM2 categories/category-images, select "VirtueMart Categories Layout" or "VirtueMart Frontpage" as the 'Menu item type' when setting up your menu item for the shop. When you want a menu item pointing to a single category, select "VirtueMart Category Layout".

Also, in VM2 administration, go to  'Products' » 'Product Categories' and select a category. Type in all your information into the 'Product Category Form'  including the image information on the 'Images' tab. Make shure your image path is identical with the image path you have in the VM2 'Configuration' » 'Templates' » Media file settings.
Example: Category Media URL: images/category/
In this case the Product Category URLs in the Product Category Form » 'Images' tab should be:
Used url: images/category/categoryimage.jpg
Used thumb url: images/category/categoryimage.jpg

You can select the images from the small 'Search Images' filter form at the top of the Product Category form » Images view. When upload new images into your image folder(s), make shure, they are "synchronized" in the 'Tools & Migration' view.
