i have had this up for 2 months.  every couple days i try and i have never gotten anywhere.  this stuff is some of the least user friendly stuff i have come across.  as a computer newb, i can usually figure it out eventually.  not with this stuff.  and since there is not a single tutorial that i have ever been able to find, i cant even get help with it.  so if anyone can help, i would appreciate it.  i have version 2.0.0

Why are you linking just to the checkout page?  For docs see http://dev.virtuemart.net/projects/virtuemart/wiki and http://oscmanuals.com/virtuemart-fdm-26.html especially the 30 minute start guide.

That site is J1.7? All versions of 1.7 have known security problems, so an upgrade to 2.5.3 would be advisable - J2.5.4 should be released in the next few days, though.

i didnt link to anything.  i just followed the instructions to get it installed and thats what shows up.  do you have any idea how i can link to the right place?

jenkinhill

OK I guess you are new to Joomla too? That is the first element to get to grips with. You need to open Joomla's main menu manager and make a link of Menu Item Type to VirtueMart Categories Layout. If that is gobbledygook to you then have a look at http://docs.joomla.org/Menu_Management

i had you right until the end.  i got to the main menu manager and see where it says virtuemart.  clicking on that, it is blank.  i dont see on the link you gave me where it helps me get people to go to the store instead of a checkout.

i am new to joomla, new to computer programming, new to virtuemart.  its been 3 months  and i still cant get a store up and i think its time to give up.  i am smart, but obviously not with computers.  i am tired i cant believe that it is IMPOSSIBLE after 3 months to have this up

jenkinhill

It takes at least 3 months to realise properly how Joomla works, assuming you build 2 or 3 sites with it in that time. Less if you already have a programming background. I have been using computers and programming different things (although not with PHP) since 1975 but still find I need to learn more.

There is a starting guide for VM on http://oscmanuals.com/virtuemart-30minute-quick-start-guide-file-27.html?folder_id=26

But this assumes that you already understand basic Joomla features.

Attached are what you should see/do in Joomla 2.5 menu manager

thanks for trying to help.  i already used the start up guide and it worked pretty well.  but i still cant get any help with why when you are on my site and click on shop it takes you to the shopping cart.  i dont know how to change that and apparently nobody else does.  i am just going to try another extension i guess and see if one of those work

dakota5369,

RE-do the menu link.

Open it up, reclick the pop up to categories, or whereever you want it. THEN, save

dakota5369

see, again this is the problem.  i am sorry that i sound like an idiot.  but save it to whatever i want?  how would i know what i want to save it as?  i dont even know what it is?

Go to your menu manager.

YOU have a link called "shop"

OPEN it, and then.

Edit it, like here
http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=100551.msg333659#msg333659

You can point it to "frontpage"

You have done a lot with a little knowledge. You just need to go to the part in my 30-Minute Quick Start Guide where it tells you to link the menu in, you have not done that right. Follow the pictures in the guide.

Have you added any products or product categories to your store?

Answer is probably from my VirtueMart 2 User Manual ebook, includes FREE updates. FREE Admin Menu Cheatsheet, Quick Install Guide & 30-Minute Quick Setup Guide http://showmeguides.com/
