All I want is for child products to show up when you select an option from the parent product, for example, select a different colour from the parent product and the different colour image loads automatically and shows stock for that colour. Is it that difficult to offer? Am I missing something blindingly obvious?
Would someone please say for definate if this can be done now or if the ability to do it will be available soon in a new release or plugin.
Clearly, from this forum, you can see that many people want this feature but their requests and questions are going unanswered. Reading between the lines I would say that this feature is not possible and may not be possible for a long time if at all.
This is so sad as apart from this very important feature VM2 is otherwise excellent.

so, you have parent item, from the parent item there is a dropdown, which shows a list of child itmes. you cannot buy the parent item (this is how it should work) as it is just a place holder for the child items
the customer selects from
color 1 25.00
color 2 27.00
color 3 24.00
each of these are really separate products with their own sku
when you select the item, it should now load that child item that was selected from the dropdown and now you select your quantity and click add to cart. now its in the cart
are you asking for the child product when selected to load in the parent product the new image and price? like with ajax?

That's exactly it! The important bit is for the child product image, price and stock to load into the parent product view when selected.
Is this possible or possible soon?
not as far as i know, that would require ajax and a lot of rewriting of vm. that is just not how parent/child products work, and i have not seen that in any cart.
of course, anything is theoretically possible if you throw enough money at it. Dont expect it do be done by the community, they all have costs associated with dev too, and this would be complicated and possibly expensive.

Thanks for clarifying that for me, it's all I wanted to know.
I didn't want or expect the community to do it for me I just wanted to know if I was missing something or if future releases or extensions would cover it. A lot of people want this ability from what I can see.
There is another Joomla cart out there that offers this facility.
I'm pretty sure this will be available as a 3rd party plugin in due course, just as it was developed and sold as an extension for VM1. All it needs is a developer to do the sums and work out if it is a viable business project.

I wanted this as part of the core! and it is already mostly done. But we decided todo first the more important things. The stockable cart variants should work that way, to choose a child, which can have different attributes, look, images and all that. But the result we got is a bit too hard to handle and afaik not completly working.
Has this issue been solved in the last month and half?
