Title: Can you natively show child products in parent product page?
Post by: jayflux on September 20, 2011, 12:50:56 PM
Or do i need some sort of hack in order to achieve this?
I have an MP3 store and I want to show all the tracks within an EP for example so users can buy these tracks separately.

I've been looking in the back end of 1.9.8g and i can't see any option to let me do this, i have even created child products but they don't appear on the front end.

Thanks in advance
J

YES !

That is an important thing to understand. When you want that a child product appears in your normal category browsepage, then give it a category.
Child product with category (may the same as parent) => true product  =>shows it
Child product with no overwritten category => variant => dont show it

hello

I don't understand very well...

I want to do the next option:

1. I have a product named "productParent" in the category "collection" and this product is displayed in the category browse page.
2. I have a product named "productChild", child of "productParent". I don't want to show this product in the category browse page (so I marked it as "uncategorised") but I want to show this child product at the page-details of "productParent".

is this possible? I don't find the way to do this...

if I put "productChild" in the same category of "productParent", "productChild" appears in the category browse page (that I don't want) and still does not appear at the page-details of "productParent".

many thanks

In this case you should provide a dropdown selection list.

and Child product with no overwritten category don't show it... where are the child products used?

Does it should appear on the page of parent product?

Looks like they didn't finish that yet.
In any way they don't give a simple answer how to do that for some reason.

Hi,
the answer is, you can choice what you want and can do plugins to handle it how you want.
Then the answer can't be simple or better all answer are right.

But you are right, it's not completely finish but the step to finish is only product stock handle.

As a variant or as additionally product.

Did read those previous post and I am little bit confused about this.

I want to have parent product (ex. jacket) and that I have 4 child products that are different sizes of that jacket. (ex. S, M, L and XL).
I wish that I have one product shown on category and that those child products are show in dropdown box on parent product.

My problem is that child products need to be stock controlled. If I use custom field to create dropdown box how can I put stock quantity for child products?

EDIT: Uups, should have read wiki better

Hi all

Has anyone got this working?  Can you now have one parent product in the category layout with several stockable child products in the product details only?

For example like this:

http://www.sportsdirect.com/karrimor-long-sleeve-zip-tech-t-shirt-mens-444150?colcode=44415092

When you select a different colour from the colour dropdown box the image changes accordingly and will inform you if it's out of stock.

Is this possible please?  Quite desparate to get thid working!!

Many thanks for your time.

Is this store for b2b or b2c?

I really don't understand what difference that makes. I think what we want to achieve is like: http://www.zarahome.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product/zarahomefr/en/zarahomefr/153617/582513/Coussin%2BAssam

I have tried all options available in the customfields and simply none of them do this. Does anyone have an answer or a sollution to this?

thnx

almost the same for me. I want to have an option to add batteries to my product for a fixed price.

No clue yet however, no response so far... Shouldn't be too difficult

Hi there. I wonder if there is a practical answer for this matter.

It is very common in shopping carts that you can have different STOCKABLE variation of a product in, products details page.

Like our friend said: A main product which will show in category listing.
And several variations of it that can be ordered from the details page.
For example the main product is T-shirt, the variations will be its sizes small, medium, large. And you can add to cart this sizes with different quantities if you want.

Any solution?

Frankly speaking, it's a BIG BIG BUG of VM2.
It seems developpers don't know what is trade at all.
Do you know that every color, every size of product has it's own SKU?
So, the task of Child is to do this thing. Noootttttttt CUSTOM FIELD. It's a different at all.
Strange that VM 1.1.9 works nice with Childs.
Just look an example and difference in selecting

(http://www.freeimagehosting.net/t/lffmo.jpg) (http://www.freeimagehosting.net/lffmo)

It defenetly should be option to show child in parant product details or no.
Now I use as Milbo wrote http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=98648.0
Sorry, but it's a little bit bullshit.
Look here, I explain.
My supplier for example gives me a price.
product_name1 SKU_1 total 15 in stock
this product has several sizes and colors. Let's take only sizes for example.
product_name1, SKU_1xl, Size: XL, price: $100, in stock: 6
product_name1, SKU_1m, Size: M, price: $80, in stock: 4
product_name1, SKU_1s, Size: S, price: $60, in stock: 5

So, what I have in my shop if I use Generic Child Variant.
I have 2 drop down lists: first is Generic Child Variant, second is the Size. But customer can't choose the size. Customer can choose only Generic Child Variant.
But the first choice is a product_name SKU_1 (it's a general name, not a feature)

Do you see the difference?
VM 1.1.9 works good with it, but not VM2.

Who wants a Child in a category like a separate product???? What is the meaning of this? It's easier to create one more product and show it in a category then to use a Child. These schema works very good in mogento shop when you combine products there by their features (size, color and so on).
So, please, think over, VM2 shouldn't go against the traditional trade rules.
Now it has many useful features, so to fix this BUG it's very important.

I need this to work too. I've read so many threads and still don't understand how to do it. We sell furniture and I need to be able to have what dmonco explains. E.g. A main product names Round Dining Table and then in the product details page the option to choose a size and material, but each combination has its own sku. The sku is very necessary not just for stock control, but we want to feed our products to price comparison sites. I don't want to create separate products for each variation because it will make it too long and difficult for a customer to browse through a category. Also some of my suppliers don't provide me with images for every variation so it would be confusing to make each variation its own seperate product with missing images. I have tried the stockable varients plugin, but there is no clear step by step guide that I can find.

I've tried this using the sample data, but my child product does not show up as an option in the parent product details page. Or anywhere!
