This is a problem with your ftp and you dont need ftp mode, when you set everything on 777 anyway.
The error shows a joomla problem with moving the files. The files are the sampelimages in BE/assets/images/vmsampelimages move them to /images/stories/virtuemart/ . There is another file the virtuemart_defaults.cfg-dist in the BE/com_virtuemart directory. Just rename the file to virtuemart_defaults.cfg
I have the same problem and i cannot see normally my categories.

Please write which version you used, which server, and so on. In General JFTP means that you use the ftp mode for joomla and that the ftp cannot move the files, and that is in fact a joomla error not vm one.
Using on Linux server, Joomla 1.7, FTP Layer On, could i disable and install it as nobody?
Just a hint - if you search in google for "JFTP:: rename: Bad response Rename failed" +"name of your webhoster" you might find a solution that works for you. ;)
