Title: New MasterCard/Discover Requrements and Authorize.net
Post by: Scott Ackerman on April 13, 2010, 18:36:09 pm
I just found out about changes to the way that MasterCard and Discover orders are going to need to be processed and am wondering how VM is going to handle these changes and when VM can be compliant. Here is the link that describes the new requirements: http://www.authorize.net/support/pafaqs/ . As you can see these requirements are being implemented very soon and they throw a 'huge monkey-wrench' in the checkout process in my opinion.

My understanding, Auth.net users will have until 2011 for this to be in effect.

Obviously this will have to be looked into. A timeline is an unknown at this point.

This is going to have to be modified via v mart AND each individual gateway module.

Yes and we have until June 30, 2011 to implement these changes. Here are links to the FAQ for those who have not seen them yet, http://www.authorize.net/support/pafaqs/ .

thank you,

Is there any way how to update Authorize.net payment module without waiting for new version of Viruemart ?!

from Authorize.net:
"What if a merchant does not comply? Is there a non-compliance fee?

Yes. Merchants are obligated to support the requirements and make the appropriate changes to support these transactions. The payment card brands will be performing frequent "Compliance Monitoring" of these rules changes and will follow through with the appropriate parties if merchants are found to be non-compliant. The amount of fees assessed will be as per the MasterCard and Discover association "non-compliance" fines described in their operating regulations and rules. For more information, please contact your Merchant Service Provider (MSP).

As a reminder, your MSP is ultimately responsible for determining if the requirements apply to your business, so please contact them for assistance in determining if your company is exempt."

This is not a simple problem.

The only good thing about this is that they are giving us until next year to solve the problem.
MasterCard's rule changes go into effect May 1, 2010, and Discover's rule changes go into effect April 16, 2010. However, Authorize.Net, MasterCard and Discover have worked together to extend these dates for all merchants using Authorize.Net solutions. Our merchants will now have until June 30, 2011, to implement support for the requirements within their systems.

Authorize is also not the only one with this problem. All shopping carts that take MC or discover must also conform to the new policies. It is probably best to wait until VM has the chance to try to solve the issue through the shopping cart. It is more than just modifying a module.
thanks,
Ralph

I think waiting for VM is not the best approach. In the end, it will be changed through community effort. Anything that is done because of this thread will surely be beneficial.

As I see it, the VM side of things is not so complicated. The return to VM will be the same, the only difference will be that the return code from, for example, Authorize should reflect the part-payment, not completed payment. So then, instead of the confirmation page, you'd see a different page (with the payment link again).

At present, we've only been working with unsuccessful / success return codes (usually as Confirmed / Pending), so there will need to be the addition of another I presume.

Mike,
I admire your enthusiasm. I would be more than willing to help, but I am far too busy to take on another project. Let me know if I can assist you in any way.
Thanks,
