Title: Remove confusing "Empty cart" link to Virtuemart
Post by: websnail on May 01, 2008, 18:36:51 pm
No offense to the developers here but putting a link to Virtuemart in the mini-cart module is not going to be a welcome addition to a users e-commerce site as it immediately leads the potential customer off on a goose chase around this site instead of around the users store buying things :)

So, to turn off this little feature quick mod for you.

Open: components/com_virtuemart/themes/default/templates/common/minicart.tpl.php

Find:
Code: [Select]
        <a href="http://virtuemart.net/" target="_blank">
        <img src="<?php echo $mm_action_url ?>components/com_virtuemart/shop_image/ps_image/menu_logo.gif" alt="VirtueMart" width="80" border="0" /></a>

Replace with:
Code: [Select]
        <!--  <a href="http://virtuemart.net/" target="_blank">
        <img src="<?php echo $mm_action_url ?>components/com_virtuemart/shop_image/ps_image/menu_logo.gif" alt="VirtueMart" width="80" border="0" />
        </a> -->

Just to note I'd never suggest removing any attribution code.. It just seems this wasn't perhaps the best plan.. and besides the logo is still there.

EDIT: Updated to remove unnecessary 2 tags and actually comment out the image.

You were missing out the comment out on the second line, so here's my fix:

<!--  <a href="http://virtuemart.net/" target="_blank">  -->
<!--   <img src="<?php echo $mm_action_url ?>components/com_virtuemart/shop_image/ps_image/menu_logo.gif" alt="VirtueMart" width="80" border="0" />  -->
<!--  </a> -->

This works - no more image.

Actually the mod was only to remove the link, not the image... but I've updated it accordingly.

All my considerations for both websnail and winfreepcs.
Thank you very much for this tip.

Yes... many cheers to websnail and winfreepcs from me too. That kind of advertising to users isn't very useful, while I agree deserved credit should be shown.

Hi,

What you guys are saying here makes perfect sense to me, but for some reason I just cant do it. In cpanel I replace the code with yours but it does'nt save. When I open the file again in notepad it just shows the original code. Why does it not save the modification? Yes, I'm new here, and I have no idea what to do next. Please help me out, I will honestly appreciate that... Thanx

If you are using cPanel you should make sure that the files you are trying to edit are owned by you, the user. If owned by Apache then you won't be able to edit, in which case you will need to CHOWN all files (CHange OWNersip) or get your host to do it.

Yes, this worked great! Thank you!

I certainly wouldn't mind a small logo and perhaps even a link on the outside edge of the template but especially with the "cart" there it made it very confusing.

Thanks!

Will this still work?
How, exactly, do I find this css file?

Thanks!

Code: [Select]
.vmCartModule div a img {
display:none;
}

in your css will do the same

YEEEEHAAA!  Finally!  A simple and quick fix!

For the mostly clueless out there (like me), just do this:

Within your Joomla backend, go to "Extensions" then "Template Manager". Choose your template and click on "Edit".  On your template, click "Edit CSS".  From the list, choose "template.css" and click on "Edit".  Copy that little snippet above and just stick it in at the top of that page.  Save everything.  Now just open up your site and it works!  You might have to reload the browser window (I did).

Thanks SO much for that simple and effective fix!

and i also got error in cpanel file manager.

even in lagency file manager this error:

"[a fatal error or timeout occurred while processing this directive]"

My problem is i m unable to do any modification in virtuemart files only rest all site i can edit.

Sounds like a bad server setup. Try ftp using FileZilla to check file ownerships & permissions. I'd suspect a problem with ownership. If you have access to the server root then CHOWN the files/folders so they are owned by user.

I actually found it advantageous to change the logo image to a more generic one (there is one in the same folder) and to remove the link.  I also pasted the same code a few lines down so that it also displayes if the cart is NOT empty.  I think I pasted the complete modified file in another post a few days ago.

Hi your right, changing the image is a great idea, but changing the link of where it goes to, involves changing the core code.

This means hacking it, which will be over written when 1.1.4 comes out in public release.

Ian

You are also correct but it is an easy hack, even for a non programmer like myself.  The better solution would be to eliminate the link altogether in1.1.4. I cannot conceive why anyone would want it. Another solution would be to make it easy to turn this option off.

I personally like the cart image.  A site can be a little oveweleming with content and pictures and I like to make it easy for customers to where their cart is.  The small test used for the "show cart" link does not help.  I like my solution very much and  am thinking of also making the image a link to the cart module so the user can click on either the text OR image to get there.

You are all wrong!!!! You can remove it under your settings...

Go to VirtueMart Admin> then choose "Configuration" > Then "Site" > Then uncheck  the box called "Show footer"... that's it...

davemiami, the component footer logo is not the same as the logo image used in the minicart module, which this thread is about.

Further to my post above, I changed this feature to suit me.  I found a cart image I liked and uploaded it and made it an active link in addition to the "Show Cart" text.  The image shows all the time even when the cart is empty and clicking on it will take you to the shopping cart.  Frankly I think this is how it should work right out of the box, but it was not too hard to change.
