At this product there are several color variants available. Currently clicking on the images beneath the main image, there is only a lightbox/popup regarding that specific image showing. Question is: is it possible when clicking on the small image, instead of showing the large image, to link directly to the child product?

I think that You are looking for something like Custom Fields For All by breakdesigns.

@Ansvt have you looked at Patricks extension ?
The extension from studio42 (Patrick) looks nice. I have bought it and done some small tests. A bit rough on the edges, but wery promising. I will definitely use this on my website in the near future.
