I found a really good tutorial on this but for a much much older version of VM. I'm currently running 3.6.10.
I've created the category, product, and multi variant with the colors separated by colons in the default (following the old guide).
But then I get lost. The drop down list shows up on the item but only as a duplicate name of the item (not a color).
A color must be selected at order, the colors have no affect on pricing.
Is there a newer guide on how to do this? (ie for colors/sizes etc)
Thanks,

If you need colors, you can use https://shop.st42.fr/en/products/shortcodes.htm > Cart colors
Thank you but I'm not worried about the display colors. I'm talking about selecting the color option or size option of the item they are purchasing. (I.E. shirt comes in black, red, green, blue etc)
And it doesn't quite seem worth spending $38 for something that should be doable natively.
The plugin have the ability to make a choice required too. And this is the case for all cart options.
post the link to the tutorial so we know what your talking about
Here's the only decent tutorial I found on the internet

Customfield type Cart variant is obsolete and in new version VM is not existing (attachment)
I see proper functionality (Customfield type String as Cart Attribute or Customfiled type Multivariant or Customfield type Generic Child Variant) here:

Still not exactly sure what you need but I did this how to ages ago but still applies for simple attributes - no stocking
