How do you think an up-to-date VM setup can handle 100000+ (a hundred thousand +) products?
Any special server requirements?

The problem is not how much products, but how much in all.
custom fields, categories, prices .... more you add complexity more you need resources.
So 100000 product is not a problem, but 100000 products with 100 custom fields, 10 categories per product, 20 prices ... have many more chance to break on a shared server.
