Check the Stockable Custom Fields (https://breakdesigns.net/extensions/stockable-custom-fields)
I think that you can do that also with the multi-variants but needs some more effort to upload an image for every child product.
You can use a Multi Variant parent product and child products, if you want to stay with VM core.
You choose the color in the drop down and the ajax will load the child product features including the image.
