I have a couple of clients using this but they also have further tweaks and coding to e.g. limit the products they can create/sell etc

Hmm? I wrote this for a member and so it is in the core. Just check the vendor options. There you can set max categories of a product of a vendor.

was referring to a system where Sub-vendors can only create one child of each of the shop owners products .. i.e. only compete on price / service for a standard range of products set by the shop owner

Is any functionality or extension to sell all products by all vendors in virtuemart ?
for this job I want to assign per shopper to a vendor for example :
shopper1 -> vendor1
shopper2 -> vendor1
shopper3 -> vendor1
shopper4 -> vendor2
shopper5 -> vendor2
shopper6 -> vendor2
If shopper1,2,3 buy any product invoice sends to vendor1 and commission assign to vendor1 , and if shopper 4,5,6 buy any product invoice sends to vendor2 and commission assign to vendor2 .
