This is a regular problem for Joomla users where the site allows user registration. If you don't need registration then turn it off in Joomla user manager options, but if you do allow/require registration then there are ways to reduce bot registrations, such as setting up reCaptcha. Break their fingers?

If you find a way of stopping spammers registering with fake email addresses please share..   :)

That might help, I never got my remote keyboard exploder plugin to work.  It's rare that you can remove spam registrations completely if you allow registration. Currently spammers are exploiting com_contact on Joomla sites to send out spammy contact emails which bounce back.  All in a day's work.
