I'm trying to get the section that says sort by to go away on my front page. I'm not able to hide the sort by category view. I don't even see a box to change it. There is no category browse page box where it should be according to the tutorial video I am watching. Please help.

Viewing a 3 year old video for an older version of VirtueMart is not much use.
You can remove the orderby section by editing and overriding components/com_virtuemart/views/category/tmpl/default.php
or hide the section with a css override: .orderby-displaynumber {display:none;}
