I am doing a furniture web site.
There are some products which have:
Size:
4 x5
5 x6
6 x 6.5
Then the 6 x 6.5 size product is available in two types: Hydraulic and manual, whereas the other two sizes are available in only one option.
How do I configure the custom fileds for this product, so that I can add the prices.

I think that using core generic child variant can do the same too.

Succeded a bit, but the child products are also visible in the category. How to hide the child products.
If they get hidden, then it be perfect.

child products. should only be visible, if you set a category inside each child.
To only see main product in the category, only set category in the parent product.

When a user selects a child product, how does he go back to the parent product.

In pro child variant, you can set parent as option, and i think that in VM generic variant too.
I do a similar task. With a multi variant of (custom fields) we create a sub-product and choose a price for the features, for example:
width, length, height, and combinations between them.
After 300 variations have been added, the page does not start loading or load slowly. I have up to 8000 variants, how do I enter them?

If you dont need sku per each product , you should never use multi variant.
I dont have all your specification, but i have already do variant of products using plugins, this permit to only set a single value and not load a whole product.
Eg here http://www.venezianeplisse.com/it/online-store/tende-veneziane/tende-veneziane-35-mm-preventivo-acquista-detail.html use many options and load quick in admin and in front.

You do not need a sku.
You only need a price for everyone. I prefer an accurate price.
I suppose I will need the price to be for different groups of customers with discounts and without. That's why I chose a multivariate sub-product. But it works up to 300. I tried with 600 but I wait 3 minutes to open the product.
I have one product with 8000 variants. The rest are up to 2000 with 200.

If discounts are simple rules it work, it depend how you need to set the price options.
oYou can for eg use baseprice to calculate a %, or add a fixed price.
Advantage is how you manage this on price changes.
In case of one product, it's very quick.Using multivariant can be a nightmare, i know that some shop owner reverted the idea to use multivariant because they dont checked for stock.
Discounts will be for shopper group.
Еach size has its own price.

For the shopper groups, i have do a plugin here https://shop.st42.fr/en/shorcodes-english-doc#cart_list, it support shopper groups, but perhaps not as you need, but i can modify it or do a new plugin, but i need to know exactly the calculation you use to define the price.
