Hi,

Just reporting as I solved it reverting to 3.0.18 but
3.0.18.1 and 3.0.18.5 gave me Call to a member function displayMediaThumb() on null
on category view

Your category template override is outdated.

i have the same issue happening but i do NOT understand this answer at all. What am i looking for in the settings / configuration?

You're using a commercial template and that is not updated to latest vm version. So please ask your template developer for a new version.

Nothing to do with settings/configuration. The template being used to display categories is/was out of date, and not compatible with versions after 3.0.18  - see the last paragraph in http://virtuemart.net/news/latest-news/477-release-of-3-0-18-connecting-the-loose-ends
