Customers sometimes experience the website stalling on checkout after they click on 'Confirm Purchase'. The site just 'spins' and doesn't go anywhere. It happens on all devices (desktop, tablet, phone). When the customer experiences this, they think that there's something wrong with the website and click 'Confirm Purchase' again only to wind up ordering the product(s) twice.
This has happened on two different servers with two different hosting companies. Payment gateway company (Authorize.net) does not have error logs to investigate the issue. Hosting company does not show any errors while running their tests (and they experienced the stall).
Therefore, what's the cause? Any solution? Out of luck and have to upgrade (really not an option)?

Double ordering was solved many versions back
Software is upgraded for a reason.....
